Dos + Do Nots:

  • Do not...

    • Put bias/ your personal opinion

      • Ex. Wrong: This idea was terrible.

        • Try instead: According to Janet from the NIH, this idea “was terrible.”

        • Also good: Some may argue there were better ideas.

    • List data/copy word-for-word a conversation

      • Anyone can search for statistics and full interviews. As a writer, it is your job to note the specifics of what is important and why.

        • Make it an engaging piece. How is this relevant to the reader?

        • Try to stick to only a few main quotes.

  • Do...

    • Write compelling sentences with strong hooks and conclusions.

      • Why should people care about this topic?

    • Paraphrase when necessary, especially for interviews and statistics.
